“Chess Players” by William Orpen
William Orpen (1878-1931) was an Irish artist who worked mainly in London. Orpen was a fine draughtsman and a successful painter of portraits for the well-to-do in Edwardian society, though many of his most striking paintings are self-portraits.

When found, the hoard contained 93 artifacts: 78 chess pieces, 14 tablemen and one belt buckle. Today, 82 pieces are owned and usually exhibited by the British Museum in London, and the remaining 11 are at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.
