Arles (Arelate): Portrait of Gaius Caesar(?) | Front and rig… | Flickr

flickr.com/photos/roger_ulrich…

Front and right profile views of a Roman marble portrait now identified by the museum as a portrait of Gaius Caesar (20 BCE-4 CE), son of Agrippa and Julia. Gaius was the maternal grandson of Augustus; he was formally adopted in 17 BCE by the emperor and named, along with his brother Lucius Caesar, heir. This portrait was found in the north gallery of the forum cryptoporticus in Arles, Provence, France. The facial features are so close to those of Augustus that the portrait was identified for many years as that of the young Octavian, still in mourning, following the death of Julius Caesar in 44 BCE. The light beard visible on the face could be a reference to youth, to mourning, or perhaps both. Musée Départemental Arles, inv. CRY.51.00.22 RBU 2013.1902-comp
