There is a similar gaming piece in the Hessisches Landesmuseum #Kassel made of walrus tusk, labelled as 13th century #chessman. As it stems from the post-medieval treasury of the landgraves of Hesse-Kassel it is most probably not an archaeological find. The Shetland finds from Mail and Scalloway appear too early for #chess. 🏺 @Archaeodons group @chess group #archaeology #histodons (📷 me, very bad light there). Unpublished AFAIK

An early medieval gaming piece in the form of a monk from Mail on Shetland. Now on display at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. 📸 My own. #MedievalMondayKevin Wilbraham (Bluesky Social)
