Bozorgmehr solves how to play chess

A board of Duodecim Scripta, a Roman game played with 15 pieces. Rules were similar to backgammon; also used for gambling. Made of stone, maybe marble; I also took this picture at a museum in Vienna. The board is actually huge, maybe a couple of meters long!

Years ago developed an app for # # in C++. It takes very long until the opening is finished. Not only due to the pawns, but also to the queen and bishops which only have short moves.
# # # (sort of #?)
As explained in Golombek's book "A History of Chess," shatranj players tried to reach opening positions more or less disregarding what the oponent was doing (kinda as in bullet!). This was possible because pawns could not move two squares up the board. Here are 4 examples:

This chess board is dated 14th-15th from Egypt, made of wood with ivory inlay.

Nice geometric patterns for the light squares. A joy of a board!

Chess during the French revolution: it was suggested to change the name of the pieces to erase its royal connotations; Louis-Bernard Guyton de Morveau proposed these changes:

King: flag bearer
Queen: officer
Bishop: dragons
Knights: cavalry
Rooks: cannons
Pawns: infantry

I REALLY Wonder ...

What was on the first 189 or so pages? The woodcuts repeat in different orders to make the game harder!

This book, though rebound in modern cloth, was clearly once part of a # album of texts bound together, maybe even containing other book/games!

Hungry Saturn and two-faced Theology don't make much more sense at full size, but here they are ... The engravings measure about 6.5 inches tall, the gridded Laberinto woodcuts, each only about 2!

Chess has inspired artists for centuries. Famous painters, the likes of Henri Matisse, Paul Klee, Marcel Duchamp, chose # as a central theme of their artwork.

"The Chess Game" was created by French painter Charles Bargue in 1883. And what is your favorite chess #?

These chess pieces, a pawn and a Rook, are dated c. 12th century from Romangordo. Made of bone, found along with several alquerque boards.

Nice Rook, with unusual holes at the top and many circular motifs.
