Spain, 12th century. If this is a chess representation, (not so easy to tell) this could be the oldest chess sculpture, in a column capital of the Spanish Romanesque cloister of the old Salamanca Cathedral. Most likely they where playing alquerque, an old version of checkers.

This chess set, 18th century, belonged in the family of Benjamin Franklin, probably owned by him. Made of fruit wood.

Knights are very peculiar, maintaining the same pattern as the bishops.

Very delicate plant motifs with a simple circular cap on top. A Black and White pawn.
