Nginx and HTTP/3
The Nginx version in Ubuntu 22.04 is pretty old (1.18) and has reached EOL yet. For receiving newer releases one must add the Nginx repository from nginx.org to the package manager and remove the old install. Nginx distinguishes a stable branch (only security updates) with even minor release numbers and a mainline branch with odd minor release numbers. The latter also gets functionality updates. I employed this guide to update my servers.
The Ubuntu package of the mainline branch delivers 1.25 at the time being which comes with inbuilt HTTP/3 support. It is still marked as experimental but some community members use it in production already. I have decided to do so, too, in order to gain some experience. Alas, only a minority of my visitors use it already despite of browser support being close to complete.
It appeared that several HTTP/3 checkers were faulty or not online anymore. My screenshot was taken from Litespeed’s HTTP/3 Check.

WordPress (6.2.2) has a health check now (German: Website-Zustand) but some of its messages appear spurious. I employ the ActivityPub plugin so you can subscribe to authors with fediverse clients like Mastodon. For ingram-braun.net, where I am the only author, simply put ib@[url=https://bsky.brid.gy/ap/did:plc:muqb37aixkrtls3dbcg7kapi]Ingram Braun[/url] in the search field of your client. Health check does not stop to complain about a faulty webfinger reply although I managed to subscribe to authors in real life.

One of the great successes of the early years of ingram-braun.net was the Chess Replay Utilities Synopsis which provided an overview over all then available chess game viewers ready for embedding in websites. Most of the projects enlisted there are now defunct. However, my demo pages are still there. Even of those viewers that were carried out as Java Applet or Flash Video. Both environments were removed from current browsers years ago. So i wondered if I can get my demo pages to run today?
Probably the most promising way is to install contemporary browsers and extensions on a Virtual Machine but it would be very much work only to view the demo pages here. And as my site is TLS only this might run into certificate errors.
In principle you can download the *.jar or *.swf files and feed a stand alone app with them. Alas, chess game viewers have the *.pgn files outside so this probably won’t work here. There are browser plugins for both formats. The Chrome addon CheerpJ Applet Runner converts Java into WebAssembly and JavaScript on the fly. It works well with the Internet Chess Club. It fails miserably on ChessTutor™. The other Java Applets render the graphical interface as expected but fail to load the games in an operational manner. The manufacturer Leaning Technologies has announced a full Java VM in WebAssembly. Hopefully we will see better results then.
Flash Video (*.swf = ShockWave Flash) should still be working in Lunascape Browser out of box. But this failed to me. There is an extension FlashPlayer – SWF to HTML for Chrome and Firefox browsers which provides a sandboxed JavaScript implementation of a flash viewer. It runs perfectly on DGT Chesstheatre. And it works on KnightVision Chess PGN Viewer, too, but fails to navigate into alternate lines.
All in all I feel it was a good decision not to remove the demo pages but preserve them as sort of archivalia.

In der ersten Runde spielte ich gegen Thomas Seelemann, damals noch Plesse Bovenden, mittlerweile zu uns gewechselt. Ich habe schonmal mehr Schwierigkeiten mit ihm gehabt.
Weiter ging es mit Jan-Christopher Zärban vom Kasseler SK 1876, denn ich noch aus der Jugend in Nordhessen kenne. Wir folgten lange uns beiden gut bekannten Pfaden, aber dann sah ich einen kleinen taktischen Witz, der die Partie für mich entschied.
Die dritte Runde brachte Stephan Buchholz, der noch vor der Jahrtausendwende bei Tempo Göttingen mal ein guter Spieler gewesen ist und nun beim ESV wieder einsteigt. Auch hier blieb ich trotz mancherlei Verirrung siegreich.
Tobias Voelkel ist auch ein starker Wiedereinsteiger nach langjähriger Schachabstinenz. Früher spielte er mal für den Schachverein Recklinghausen Süd. Gegen mich verhaspelte er sich in der Eröffnung und verlor schnell. Das passiert auch aktiveren Spieler mitunter.
In der sechsten Runde mußte ich dann gegen den nominellen Turnierfavoriten Gerhard Nolte antreten. Gegen ihn habe ein positives Gesamtergebnis und stand auch diesmal schnell recht gut. Aber dann wurde es doch eine wilde Partie.
Gegen Karl-Heinz Schnegelsberg von Caissa Kassel stand ich nach der Eröffnung ziemlich gut. Trotzdem mündete das in ein spannendes Duell, das buchstäblich erst in den Schlußsekunden zu meinen Gunsten entschieden wurde.
Die neunte Runde mußte dann wegen eines schweren Unwetters abgesagt werden. Zu viele Spieler konnten das Spiellokal nicht erreichen, auch ich nicht. Dadurch kam die Partie gegen Cai Dieball bedauerlicherweise nicht mehr zustande. Mir hätte ein Remis für den Turniersieg genügt.

Als Niedersachse außer Konkurrenz nahm ich an der Bezirkseinzelmeisterschaft von Nordhessen 2022 in Hofgeismar teil. Dort hat man jetzt ein toughes Regiment mit fünf Runden an zwei Tagen.
