I am curious if this imagery represents an actual chess piece or the idea of a chess piece. If it points to a physical object - do you have any idea of what it would have been made of? Wood? Bone? Ivory? Thanks.
The image is from the first German chess book that employs the reformed rules by Gustavus Selenus 1616. So there is no dount that it is actually a chessman. But the engraving might be idealized.

The board is wrong according to today's standards? Black on the upper left where we expect white. Did that only become a rule later or am I getting something wrong here?
As far as I know the practice is very old. A quick look into Lucena's incunabulum proves that he always stuck to it.
