The most precious objects of the GM Lothar Schmid #chess collection will be sold at Sotheby's London in April. The family tried in vain to sell it as a whole. Among the lots are the only complete #Lucena copy in private hands and the scoresheets of the Fischer–Spassky match.

There is a similar gaming piece in the Hessisches Landesmuseum #Kassel made of walrus tusk, labelled as 13th century #chessman. As it stems from the post-medieval treasury of the landgraves of Hesse-Kassel it is most probably not an archaeological find. 2025 is going to get a tragic year for the #chess world. After Robert Hübner and Boris Spassky another legend passed away: Friðrik Ólafsson at age 90. He was the first grandmaster in #Iceland, a world class player at his peak and FIDE president. There is an extensive documentation of his career by the Skáksögufélagið (#Icelandic Chess Heritage Society). #chesshistory #RIP (📷 Wijk aan Zee 1969)

There has been some work done on Anatoly Karpov's #website. Most surprising: the English pages were removed. The language switch (Russian/English) disappeared between July 24th and July 26th 2024. The English deep links were removed, and return 404 now. #chess
